Simple reading books color-coded pink and with eight pages in each book. Pictures are on the left and the text describing the picture is on the right. Three-letter phonic words and sight words are used. Capital letters and punctuation follow standard orthography.
<h3>Preparation</h3>
Example story:<br />
Title: <strong>The pup </strong>and the <strong>Red Tin Jet<br />
<br />
</strong>"The tap ran, and the pup got wet.<br />
Bob had to fix the tap, and not let it run.<br />
Nan let the jam set, and got a mop-to-mop up.<br />
The pup sat in the wet mud.<br />
Bob sat the pup in the tub, and got rid of the mud.<br />
Dan had a red tin jet.<br />
Bob had a rag to rub the mud off the jet.<br />
Nan had to fix the red tin jet.<br />
The jam had set in the big pan. Nan, Bob and Dan had jam on a big bun.<br />
Dan got his red tin jet. Dan and the pup had a lot of fun in the sun".<strong><br />

<ol>
<li>The Directress selects one book and encourages the child to read the storybook aloud, blending the sounds for unfamiliar words.</li>
<li>The child may read another book if he wants to.</li>

<h3>Points Of Interest</h3>
If the child does not recognize a word, encourage the child to say the individual letter sounds, to blend the sounds and read the word. Encourage the child to reread the sentence for fluency and meaning. The child usually corrects his own mistakes because he never expected to read a word that cannot be sounded phonetically except for sight words.
<h3>Purpose</h3>
<ul>
<li>Develop reading skills.</li>
<li>Extend reading vocabulary.</li>
<li>Provide meaningful reading experiences.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Variation</h3>
The child should be encouraged to read to a friend or family members.<br />

There should be about six books at this level. Display it separately on the shelf to attract the children to it. Do not place them in a stack on the shelf. Change it frequently.
